Center for Functional Nanomaterials at BNL Receives LEED Silver Certification

6/2/2008 - The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory received LEED® Silver certification with 34 points by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) .  This is the second project E.W. Howell completed at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the second LEED certified project at the lab.  E.W. Howell provided general construction services for the project, and HDR Architecture served as the Architect/Engineer.

The Center for Functional Nanomaterials is a 94,500 square foot state-of-the-art facility which occupies 2 floors and includes 5,000-square-feet of clean rooms, wet and dry general laboratory space, office space for users and staff, vibration- and noise-controlled research areas, and anti-static flooring lab areas

This Center is one of five of its kind built by the U.S. Department of Energy. It provides state-of-the-art capabilities for the development and understanding of nanoscale materials which will help the U.S. achieve energy independence.  It includes state-of-the-art heating and ventilation equipment, roofing materials designed for energy conservation, noise and vibration sensitive concrete slabs.

This project was awarded a 2007 Build NY Award by the General Building Contractors of NY State (GBC) and also received a Best of '07 award for best laboratory project by New York Construction magazine.

Achieving LEED certification required careful attention to the details of LEED requirements, options and documentation requirements during design and construction. While some LEED options are standard practice in all BNL buildings, such as no smoking and recycling, others are new practices for BNL.  E.W. Howell exceeded LEED recycling requirements that were set in the contract including:

  • 75% diverted construction waste from Landfill (actual at 79.99%)
  • 10% recycled content in building material (actual at 13.57%)
  • 10% of building material extracted within 500 mile radius (actual at 27.99%)
