 | Plainview, NY…August 17, 2010…E.W. Howell, one of the region’s leading general contracting and construction management firms is pleased to announce the award for general construction services for the Laboratory Office Buildings (LOB’s) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The LOB project is part of the National Synchrotron Light Source II construction, which will be the world’s most advanced storage ring light source when complete in 2015. E.W. Howell will construct three LOB’s with various laboratories and offices. The project will provide 124,000 square feet of lab and office space for NSLS-II. Occupancy of the first LOB is anticipated in 2012, with the balance of construction lasting through 2013. Each LOB will feature a mix of wet labs, dry labs, fabrication/assembly shops, and tech spaces that have easy access to the NSLS-II experimental floor. Each building will have offices to accommodate up to 124 occupants. The buildings were designed to attain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Funding for this new construction comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The NSLS-II project received $150 million in ARRA funding, $34 million of which is designated for the LOB’s contract. When complete the new buildings will enable discovery-class science, including science that will drive abundant, safe, and clean energy technologies. The unique characteristics of NSLS-II will help scientists explore the grand challenges they face in developing new materials with advanced properties. It will pave the way to discoveries in physics, chemistry, and biology — advances that will ultimately enhance national security and help drive the development of abundant, safe, and clean energy technologies. “This project is an important one for the Long Island economy and we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with BNL”, says the President of E.W. Howell, Howard Rowland. At the height of construction hundreds of local jobs will be created from the hiring of local vendors and subcontractors. E.W. Howell’s Experience at BNL The newly awarded LOB project marks E.W. Howell’s fifth project at BNL since 2005. E.W. Howell also served as general contractor for the 65,000-square-foot Research Support Building, completed in 2006, and the 94,500-square-foot Center for Functional Nanomaterials, completed in 2007. Both buildings were awarded a LEED silver rating by the U.S. Green Building Council, which evaluates buildings for sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental qualities. Currently, E.W. Howell is working on the Chilled Water Facility expansion and was recently awarded the 88,000 SF Interdisciplinary Science Building which will be built to attain a LEED gold certification. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | E.W. | E.W. Howell, one of the region’s leading general contracting and construction management firms, was notified last week that the Howell-built Manhattanville CollegeLEED Gold certification. Completed in March of 2008, the 35,000 square foot building is the third built by Howell to receive LEED certification, and the first to earn the Gold designation. The Student Center is the tenth LEED Gold building to be constructed in New York State under Version 2.1. Student Center for the Creative Arts has received “The exacting standards of LEED Gold certification must be met throughout the design and construction process,” explained E. W. Howell President Howard Rowland. “A high level of expertise, careful attention to detail and scrupulous oversight of the building process is essential to meet these prerequisites. The construction phase is the realization of the architect’s vision and is what ultimately determines the LEED certification.” Achieving LEED certification required the design team and E. W. Howell to consider LEED-specific requirements, options and documentation. Designed by Peter Gisolfi Associates, the Manhattanville project utilizes environmentally sustainable building materials and innovative construction strategies that conserve the Center’s overall energy and water use and reduce its operational costs. During construction E.W. Howell was able to divert 94 percent of all wastes from landfill disposal, utilized 18-percent recycled products and purchased 23.2 percent of project materials from regional sources. Fifty-two percent of the wood used came from certified forests, and low VOC paints, adhesives and sealants, as well as Green Label plus carpeting were also used. Solar collectors generate 13 percent of the building’s electricity. Fiver projects currently being built by E.W. Howell have been registered with the USGBC with a certification goal of LEED silver of higher, including the 43,000 square foot Advanced Energy Research Laboratory on the SUNY Stony Brook campus. Designed to achieve platinum certification, the state-of-the-art facility will conduct research on alternative fuels and energy conservation. “LEED certified buildings typically use resources more efficiently and provide healthier work and living environments, which contributes to higher productivity and improved health and comfort of those who work in and otherwise use the buildings,” added Rowland.
