E.W. Howell Completes Construction of Center for Functional Nanomaterials at
Brookhaven National Laboratory
5/29/2007 - On May 21, 2007 , the highly anticipated grand opening of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven Laboratory took place. Located in Upton , NY the CFN is a 94,500 square foot state-of-the-art facility which occupies 2 floors and includes 5,000-square-feet of clean rooms, wet and dry general laboratory space, office space for users and staff, vibration- and, noise-controlled research areas, and anti-static flooring lab areas
This Center is one of five of its kind built by the U.S. Department of Energy. It serves to provide state-of-the-art capabilities for the development and understanding of nanoscale materials which will help the U.S. achieve energy independence. The CFN has been registered with the United States Green Building Council as a LEED Building for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The CFN will meet all of the LEED requirements including state-of-the-art heating and ventilation equipment, roofing materials designed for energy conservation, noise and vibration sensitive concrete slabs.
The CFN was designed by HDR Architecture of Virginia, and general construction services were provided by E.W. Howell Co., Inc. , of Woodbury, NY. This is the second project E.W. Howell has completed for Brookhaven Laboratory. Since 2005, they have maintained a constant presence at the lab with two simultaneous projects; the Research Support Building which was completed in 2006, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials.
