E.W. Howell was the Construction Manager on this expansion project for Underwriters Laboratories (UL). A new 13,500 SF accessory office and laboratory building were constructed on an undeveloped 2.7 acre parcel of land adjacent to their existing 13.1 acre facility in Melville, NY.

This is the largest testing facility of its kind. The state-of-the-art electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing laboratory is the most advanced 10-meter anechoic chamber in the country, along with the most up-to-date array of EMC testing equipment, all under one roof. The facility expands UL’s ability to test electric and electronic products to worldwide regulations, such as those established by the European Union, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Communications Commission.

The new EMC testing laboratory provides more accurate and state-of-the-art automated measurement techniques. The anechoic chamber, eliminates patterns of radiation that typically bombard the air from TV and radio signals, cell phones, radar and walkie talkies. The chamber is constructed of special materials that stop extraneous signals from entering the facility.

The new building is independent of the existing facility, but has a conduit tie installation for routing voice, data fire/security network extensions.
